O’Sullivan Davies Lawyers hosts the world’s greatest yachtsman, Jon Sanders
Yesterday O’Sullivan Davies Lawyers hosted the world’s greatest solo yachtsman, West Australian Jon Sanders who was the first guest speaker in the firm’s ‘O’Sullivan Davies Lawyers Presents’ series.
Accompanying Jon was Dr Stephen Davis of No Plastic Oceans. Both spoke in front of a capacity crowd about sailing and the challenges of sailing solo, the ocean, plastics and the importance of Jon’s 11th circumnavigation of the world, a voyage to collect ocean samples for a world-first comprehensive study by Curtin University to measure the levels of micro plastics in our oceans.
No Plastic Oceans reports that there is between 8 and 15 million tonnes of plastic going into the ocean every year with just one per cent on the surface, five per cent that ends up on our beaches and the balance, 94 per cent, sinking to the ocean floor.
The consequences are more than environmental, it is also a health risk as marine life ingests microplastics that humans in turn ingest with every seafood meal.
Eighty-year-old Jon will start his 11th solo circumnavigation on Sunday 13 October from Fremantle. If you would like to sponsor the voyage that is likely to attract worldwide media attention, please visit https://noplasticoceans.org/support/ or donate at www.gofundme.com/jonsanders
Jon Sanders has solo circumnavigated the planet ten times including a triple circumnavigation of the world from 25 May 1986 to 13 March 1988 where he covered 70,000 nautical miles in 658 days, the longest distance sailed continuously by any person or vessel. He holds a multitude of world records and awards and was awarded Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 1989 for services to sailing and marine science.
